Nintendo Switch – The handheld console for modern gaming

Find out in this post what makes the Nintendo Switch a special console and why I think it’s good to have it with you.

I’ve often talked about the many video game releases based on the Nintendo Switch , but I’ve rarely talked about the console itself and its capabilities.

Today we are finally going to talk about the new Nintendo console.

First, we will describe the Nintendo Switch and then give our personal opinion on using the console since its release in 2017.

Nintendo Switch – The handheld console for modern gaming

What is the Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo Switch specs – everything you need to know about each model

The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console that allows you to play in home console mode or in portable console mode.

The philosophy of the Japanese company in the creation and design of this console is to “create a new way of playing” .

Many consoles focus on power and the latest technology, but the Nintendo Switch stands out from its peers by defining a new way to play.

In fact, even in portable mode, you can separate the screen from the controllers to play wherever you are.

Now that we understand each other, it is time to move on to evaluating the product.

Evaluation and our Opinion

In this section we will note by the sign “+” of each title, what corresponds in our opinion to the advantages and by the sign “-” , what corresponds to the disadvantages.

For a summary, I recommend you see the table of contents at the beginning of this post.

+ Very hybrid Nintendo Switch console

The Nintendo Switch, as you’ve seen, is a highly hybrid console. This is also a significant advantage highlighted by the Japanese company.

You can play any game in mobile mode, like the Gameboy for older games, and in home console mode to play on TV. The transition between these two modes is very smooth when I personally tested it.

To compensate for power outages in our country of Togo, we can play in tabletop mode where the Switch screen serves as a mini TV. It’s also when the power goes out that I most often test games.

The Joy-Cons can be detached and placed on an accessory, transforming it into a full-fledged controller. It’s also possible to play with each Joy-Con in each hand.

In this mode even your movement is taken into account in certain games to improve the experience.

+/- Battery time

If you like to play in portable console modes, the question of battery life arises… seriously.

We can naturally say that after a long time of playing, if the Nintendo Switch is about to discharge, we can run to its TV support to continue the adventure directly on television without interruption.

Yes it is possible and I myself have done it several times but as a full time mobile gamer, we will forget the TV and treat it like a portable console.

To answer the main question, I played Zelda Breath of the Wild comfortably for 2 hours. The battery, if I remember correctly, was hardly below 60%.

Your battery life will depend heavily on the game you play. It’s estimated that you’ll need between 2.5 and 6.5 hours of playtime on average.

For heavy gamers it might not seem like enough, but for me, it’s more than enough since I only play for 40 minutes per session unless the cutscene is long.

+ Two players can play by default

Speaking of the hybridity of the console, that’s not all, each joycon can become an independent controller from the other.

This allows you to play games with your friends. It’s not like before, where you had to pay for a second controller to play with your little brother or put in batteries to play a console game.

+ Supports HD

Obviously, and that’s what makes the console so special.

When you play the Nintendo Switch on HDTV, especially with Zelda (our test game), you feel a bit like you’re on a PS4 console (I don’t dare say PS5 because we haven’t tested it yet).

High definition support is a must for playing on large screens and enjoying large-scale graphics.

By the way, one of the most graphically demanding games of all time is being adapted for Nintendo Switch.

– It’s beautiful but it doesn’t support Bluetooth headphones

Yes!!! and it’s really a shame for a regular wireless headset user like me. It’s a negative point not to be overlooked if you buy a Nintendo Switch.

If your TV has a Bluetooth function, you can still connect it to your headset to play without disturbing your loved ones.

Many choices of games

The Survivalists: The Game is now available on Nintendo Switch

What makes a good console is not its power, and even less so the technological possibilities it offers.

It’s the games it owns. With the Nintendo Switch, the Japanese company seems to be increasingly promoting independent developers.

This means that it is now possible to find many PlayStation and PC games on the Nintendo Switch.

While searching the Nintendo eShop I found trilogies and even sagas of games like Naruto Ninja’s Storm.

There are some good indie games like  The Survivalists  and many online games including  Override 2: Super Mech League and  Super Animal Royale  .

If you’re a retro type, you can sign up for the Nintendo Switch Online service to play over 100 NES and Super NES games online.

This last feature, although very interesting and allowing us to play online with games like Fortnite, has other drawbacks.

The latest games on Switch

– The Nintendo Switch Online service is not free.

Oh yes, we must not forget that the new Nintendo console is not like a computer where you can connect or play online as you wish without paying fees like other free-to-play games.

At the time of writing the service costs around $3.99 (2200 CFA francs) per month and nearly $20 per month (11000 CFA francs).

Luckily it’s much cheaper, but the idea of paying for a game and the online service to play hurts.

What’s new on the Switch console

Since the release of the standard Nintendo Switch, there have been new variants of the console such as the Nintendo Switch Lite which sacrifices its hybrid side and the Switch OLED which on the contrary adds new features and largely reduces the defects found on the standard Switch.
