What would Google be like if it was created in the 60s or 80s? That’s what you’re going to find out with Google BBS.
An unusual web platform arising from a relevant question.
What would Google be like if it was created in the 60s or 80s?
If this question has never crossed your mind, there are developer artists who have had the idea for you and that’s not all.
They answered this question with a working solution to defend their point of view.
In this post, we will show you what one of the most used search engines would have been in the 60s or 80s.
Google BBS – What would Google look like today if we lived in the 60s and 80s ?
Google BBS
Google BBS is an adaptation of the Google search engine whose interface was designed for the computer environment of the 80s.
In fact, there were no windows and mice to click on buttons at that time. All users interacted with computers via the terminal.
This black background interface with white or colored writing.
If you want to put yourself in the shoes of the first Internet users of the 80s, try Google BBS via the link: masswerk.at/googleBBS/ .
To enter a url press the ‘S’ key in Google BBS then type the search you want, after writing validate with the ‘ENTER’ key.
You can choose click on one of the results with ‘ENTER’ keys and scroll through the google BBS results by pressing any other key.
The user manual is written under the interface of the google BBS terminal and the latter only concerns the 1980 version of the terminal.
Google asteroids
Google asteroids is an interface based on the famous asteroids game, the difference being the targets. While in general the game targets are asteroids, the targets of this engine are the letters of the alphabet.
You compose your search term by dragging on the corresponding letters. You would encounter this type of search engine in the arcades of the years when electronic games were just beginning.

Google of the 60s
A web application that is ingenious to say the least. If we go back further in time, this web application would describe what Google would look like in the 60s.
At that time, computers did not have screens and perforated plates were used as a support to transmit instructions to the machine.
The results were printed on paper. To get a more precise view, I invite you to test Google 60 on masswerk.at/google60/.
