Lemon is a fruit widely used in everyday life. We regularly use a lemon in consumption and also for cleaning.
In this article we are going to tell you about the benefits of this widely used and at the same time forgotten fruit because it is deeply rooted in our habits and is part of our daily life.
Difference Between Lime and Lemon
Before I begin I would like to note one very important thing about lemon. The lime and yellow lemon do not come from the same tree. What is called a lime is not an unripe lemon at all.
To begin, we will talk about the lemon. The lemon is the fruit you see in the image below.
That's the real lemon we often talk about. This fruit is not very responsive in Africa especially in Togo.
Lime on the other hand is actually called Lime . It is a fruit that comes from a tree called lime. This fruit is very widespread in Africa and it is most often given the name of lime when in reality it is just lime.
The image below that of the lime commonly called lime or lemon for short if you are in Togo.
In terms of benefits, lemons and limes have many things in common.
Side composition they are all very similar except that the lemon is larger and contains more vitamin C than the lime while the latter is smaller and contains more carbohydrates than the lemon.
In this article when I'm going to talk about lemons I'm going to refer a lot more to lemons. You just have to remember that the benefits between lime (lime) and lemon are very similar. Both fruits also have almost the same function in our organism and household.
Composition of lemon
We cannot talk about the benefits and benefits of lemon without talking about its composition. The composition of lemon will allow us to understand why this fruit is so useful in our daily life. The 100g lemon is composed of approximately:
- 91,30g Water
- 0,50g of Fiber
- 1,56 g of Carbohydrates
- 28,40 µg of Vitamin B9
- 45 mg of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)
Apart from water, fiber and carbohydrates, lemon is known to have a high content of vitamin C. From these compositions, we recognize several virtues that we will discover in the next section.
The 11 benefits of lemon juice
1- Lemon reduces the risk of contracting chronic diseases
Chronic illnesses are illnesses that are difficult to cure. Victims spend their entire lives reducing the symptoms of these diseases. To name just two examples, diabetes and asthma are among them.
The causes of these types of diseases come from very reactive chemicals called free radicals. The latter come naturally from “waste” resulting from chemical reactions allowing cells to convert fatty acids and glucose into energy using oxygen.
To fight against free radicals, the body uses antioxidants to trap them, making them harmless to humans. Antioxidants are found in all foods rich in vitamin C such as lemon and velvety black tamarind pulp.
2- Lemon is good for the heart
Cardiovascular disease is the biggest cause of death in the world. Many factors are at the origin of cardiovascular disorders. These include poor diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and excess alcohol.
The consequences noted are the increase in the level of glucose or lipids in the blood, hypertension and finally overweight and obesity.
To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is recommended to consume foods rich in vitamin C such as the pulp of velvet tamarind. Lemon, oranges or grapefruit also prevent heart-related illnesses.
Lemon also lowers blood cholesterol.
3- Lemon fights iron deficiency or anemia
Iron is an important nutrient for the body. It mainly acts in the storage of oxygen in the blood. It is also present in the muscles in order to provide it with the oxygen necessary to function.
A small amount of iron in the body causes iron deficiency anemia which is characterized by a lack of red blood cells in the blood. This disease is also the consequence of the low absorption of iron in the blood by the body.
Lemon helps prevent anemia thanks to the vitamin C it contains in abundance.
4- Lemon increases antioxidants in the body
Antioxidants effectively fight against free radicals in our organism. Free radicals are very reactive molecules responsible for several types of diseases including chronic diseases. Free radicals are also responsible for the aging of cells and therefore the aging of human beings.
The role of antioxidants is to destroy free radicals by making them harmless to organisms. The high amount of antioxidants contained in lemon can effectively slow down the aging of an individual.
To prevent free radicals, the consumption of industrialized foods, contact with chemicals and pesticides must be minimized.
5 – Lemon boosts immunity by strengthening white blood cells
White blood cells are cells designed to fight infection and disease. These immune system cells are created in the bone marrow to protect us. When they are in small quantity in our body, a bad bacterium can become a mortal danger for humans.
This is why the quality of our immune system depends largely on the quality and number of our leukocytes (white blood cells). The production of the latter depends on what we eat.
A study has shown that vitamin C strengthens our immune system by increasing the mobility of white blood cells. It also promotes the production of immunoglobulins, responsible for the differentiation of dangerous and non-dangerous cells.
Lemon being a fruit containing a large amount of vitamin C, boosts our body by strengthening white blood cells.
6- Lemon prevents high blood pressure
Lemon juice prevents hypertension by helping to make our blood walls more flexible and flexible thanks to the vitamin C it contains in abundance. This helps reduce blood pressure.
To prevent hypertension it is also recommended to consume fruits rich in potassium (black tamarind, walnuts, avocado, banana and dried date) and to reduce the amount of salt in our food.
7- Lemon is good for the skin
Lemon also purifies the skin. The fruit contains many nutrients which when consumed regularly makes our skin brighter and gives the face a healthy glow. Regular consumption of lemons can reduce skin disorders and other skin diseases.
8- Lemon eliminates bad odors.
It is very common in Togo that when you don't have deodorant you have to use lemon.
Lemon is the natural deodorant that really cleans armpits of all bad odors for the day. To use it, apply it 30 minutes to an hour before showering. After that, you are ready for a good day.
In the kitchen, most foods and meats naturally smell bad. This is often the case with most wild meats. PTo eliminate these odors, lemon juice is often used.
9- Lemon fights nausea
Lemon is really effective in eliminating nausea. Very often when you smell bad odors or feel unwell, the advice we often give is to suck the undiluted juice of a half-cut lemon.
Sometimes just pressing it against the tongue will reduce the nausea.
10- Lemon is good for the liver and pancreas
After a good drunken evening it is advisable to drink lemon juice to eliminate toxins. The lemon allows the liver to produce enough bile to eliminate the toxins contained in the latter.
Lemon juice in the morning on an empty stomach also helps cleanse the stomach and eliminate fatigue.
11 – Lemon greatly reduces blood sugar levels
An survey has shown that lemon does a lot to slow down blood sugar levels compared to tea and of course water. Of course the lemon is not the only fruit that has this ability. Any acidic food and vinegars will do.
What are the disadvantages of lemon juice?
Lemon has many benefits. Unfortunately this fruit is not for everyone. I have already met some people who have health problems and they have been advised not to consume the lemon. If this is your case, please don't force it. Consult your doctor or nutritionist for a balanced diet.
If you have no particular health problem, lemon can still be dangerous for you.
Stomach problems
One can wonder if it is good to take lemon every day? it depends on what you mean by every day and how you consume it. Drinking lemon before or after each meal would be beneficial for health. Consuming lemon in too large quantities would cause disorders such as heartburn, nausea and abdominal pain.
Sleep disorder
My parents had often told me to avoid consuming fruits rich in vitamin C in the evenings. It would keep me from sleeping. From experience, I sometimes doze off after drinking a good lemon juice. But often the itron in the morning makes me more awake. Did they get their advice wrong? It would all depend on your body.
Some people have trouble sleeping after drinking lemon at night. If you are wondering if it is good to drink lemon juice at night, it is best to avoid consuming it very late at night or just before sleeping if you do not want to take the risk. Otherwise, no health problems are noticed so far.
Tooth sensitivity
Lemon weakens our teeth and gums every time we drink it. The consequence that can often be felt is the strong sensitivity of the teeth to cold and heat. To avoid finding yourself in this situation, drink water by rinsing your mouth immediately after consuming lemon juice. If you are not thirsty you can simply spit the water out.
